Description
The MCAT+ Micro Cross Arm Tester is a compact, portable instrument designed to detect faulty insulators and measure prospective short circuit current (ISC) on 11kV unearthed wooden poles. It supports both single-phase and three-phase overhead line systems. As a result, it helps engineers verify pole safety before energisation, improving reliability and reducing risk.
Designed for 50Hz networks, the MCAT+ works in conjunction with the WPC1000TX wireless transmitter. It compares the phase relationship between the live conductor and the cross arm to detect insulation faults. In addition, the unit will automatically inhibit testing if the cross arm voltage exceeds 2.7kV, thereby protecting both user and equipment.
Voltage measurements are precise, with accuracy rated at ±1% up to 11kV and ±5% above 11kV. Furthermore, the device uses four LED indicators and an audible alarm to signal test results clearly. The ISC level is displayed using a simple pass/fail threshold: safe (<0.3 mA), caution (0.3–5 mA), and unsafe (>5 mA).
The test process is supported by a high-contrast 240 × 64 graphic LCD, which remains visible even in bright outdoor conditions. Moreover, the user interface features a straightforward encoder and push button, allowing fast and intuitive navigation. A built-in self-test routine and probe validation function further enhance safety and user confidence.
The MCAT+ operates reliably in challenging environments, with an operating temperature range of -25°C to +55°C. It runs on six 1.5V C-cell batteries, while the transmitter uses a 9V PP3 battery. Thanks to its lightweight and rugged construction, the unit is ideal for demanding field applications.
Most importantly, the MCAT+ is built to IEC 61481-1 and BS EN 61243-2 standards. Therefore, it ensures both compliance and peace of mind during live line inspections, cross arm safety checks, and insulation condition assessments.
Our partners, including Acutest, Alpha Electronics, Cuthbertson Laird, Norwich Instrument Services, and PASS Ltd offer the MCAT+ in the United Kingdom. If you are based outside of Great Britain, you can order the product through our worldwide distribution network.
